AI and competitive advantage: what will customers pay for?

A capable AI application leaves open the question of durable economic advantage. This reading route moves from customer benefit to testable assumptions, complete costs and a reasoned decision about the next investment.

Four steps through the question

  1. What remains when an AI feature is copied?

Name the benefit that a later deployment can inherit from earlier work. The article distinguishes the visible feature, demonstrable company capabilities and the effort required from customers.

  2. Which assumptions hold up your AI strategy?

Make the assumptions between benefit, purchase and revenue explicit. Choose the next investigation according to which uncertainty could actually change your decision.

  3. Buying or building AI: the complete cost calculation

Compare the same usable service over the same period. The fully hypothetical calculation includes integration, review, operation and exit. Replace its assumptions with your own figures.

  4. Before your AI pilot, decide what would make you stop

Agree before a trial which findings should lead to stopping, changing or continuing it. The accompanying 20-page booklet provides fillable worksheets and space to record the reasoning behind the decision.

For your next working session

  • Which difference would customers notice and pay for?
  • Which assumption supports the next financial commitment?
  • What bounded investigation could examine that assumption in time?

How to use this evidence

I selected these articles as a reading route. Building aiomics brings me into daily contact with questions about reliability, working practices and purchasing decisions. The individual articles identify research, personal experience and worked examples, with links to their sources. This collection is a selection rather than a systematic review of all studies. When applying an argument, check the task, setting and outcome that were examined.
